Text for Cantata 45
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

ERSTER TEIL (Part 1)

1. CORO
Es ist dir gesagt, Mensch,
     It has been told you, human,
was gut ist und was der Herr von dir fordert,
     what is good and what the Lord requires of you,
nämlich: Gottes Wort halten und Liebe üben
     namely: to keep God’s word and practice love
und demütig sein vor deinem Gott.
     and be humble before your God.

2. RECITATIVO TENORE
Der Höchste lässt mich seinen Willen wissen
     The Most High reveals to me his will
und was ihm wohlgefällt;
     and what is pleasing to him;
Er hat sein Wort zur Richtschnur dargestellt,
     He has placed his word here as a guideline,
wornach mein Fuß soll sein geflissen
allzeit einherzugehn
     upon which my foot should
     always be deliberately aligned
mit Furcht, mit Demut und mit Liebe
     with fear, with humility and with love
als Proben des Gehorsams, den ich übe,
     as a rehearsal for the obedience I will practice,
     in order to exist one day as a loyal servant.

 3. ARIA TENORE
Weiß ich Gottes Rechte,
     I know God’s justice,
was ist's, das mir helfen kann,
     it is that which can help me
wenn er mir als seinem Knechte
fordert scharfe Rechnung an.
     when he levies from me, his servant,
     a stiff charge
Seele, denke dich zu retten,
    soul, think to save yourself
auf Gehorsam folget Lohn;
     as one obedient, comply with payment;
Qual und Hohn
     complaint and libel
drohet deinem Übertreten!
     threaten your being passed over!

ZWEITER TEIL (Part 2)

4. ARIOSO BASSO
     Many will say to me on that day:
Herr, Herr, haben wir nicht in deinem Namen geweissaget,
     Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name,
     have we not cast out devils in your name,
     have we not done many deeds in your name?
Denn werde ich ihnen bekennen:
     Then I will profess to them:
Ich habe euch noch nie erkannt,
     I have never known you,
weichet alle von mir, ihr Übeltäter!
     withdraw from me all, you evildoers!

5. ARIA ALTO
Wer Gott bekennt
     Whoever professes God
aus wahrem Herzensgrund,
     out of true heart’s devotion,
den will er auch bekennen.
     him too will God profess.
Denn der muß ewig brennen,
     For he will surely burn eternally,
der einzig mit dem Mund
ihn Herren nennt.
     whoever, from his mouth,
     names himself Lord.

6. RECITATIVO ALTO
     So then, heart and mouth themselves will be my judge,
     and Gott will issue me reward for my intent:
trifft nun mein Wandel nicht nach seinen Worten ein,
     if my life's course does not follow his word,
wer will hernach der Seelen Schaden heilen?
     who hereafter will heal my soul’s failings?
Was mach ich mir denn selber Hindernis?
     Why then create obstacles for myself?
Des Herren Wille muß geschehen,
     The Lord’s will must occur,
doch ist sein Beistand auch gewiss,
     yet his assistance is also certain,
     that he might well see his work completed through me.

7. CORALE
Was mir zu tun gebühret,
     May what is expected of me
worzu mich dein Befehl
    by your directive to me,
in meinem Stande führet!
     be carried out to my ability!
Gib, daß ichs tue bald,
     Grant that I do it swiftly
zu der Zeit, da ich soll;
     at that moment when I should;
und wenn ichs tu, so gib,
     and when I do it, thus grant
daß es gerate wohl!
     that it be well advised!
