Text for Cantata 35
Geist und Seele wird verwirret
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

ERSTER TEIL  (Part 1)

1. SINFONIA

2. ARIA ALTO
Geist und Seele wird verwirret,
     Spirit and soul become bewildered
wenn sie dich, mein Gott, betracht'.
when they consider you, my God.
Denn die Wunder, so sie kennet
For the miracles that they recognize
und das Volk mit Jauchzen nennet,
and which the people refer to with rejoicing
hat sie taub und stumm gemacht.
have made them deaf and dumb.

3. RECITATIVO ALTO
Ich wundre mich;
     I am in wonder;
denn alles, was man sieht,
     for everything that one beholds
muß uns Verwundrung geben.
     must cause us wonderment.
Betracht ich dich, du teurer Gottessohn,
I regard you, you precious son of God,
so flieht Vernunft und auch Verstand davon.
thus reason and sensibility take flight as well.
Du machst es eben,
     You make straight
daß sonst ein Wunderwerk vor dir was Schlechtes ist.
what without a miracle before you is crooked.
Du bist dem Namen, Tun und Amte
You are by name, deed and office,
nach erst wunderreich,
from the start, rich in miracles,
dir ist kein Wunderding auf dieser Erde gleich.
no wondrous thing upon this earth
     compares to you.
Den Tauben gibst du das Gehör,
To the deaf you give hearing,
den Stummen ihre Sprache wieder,
to the dumb, their speech once more,
ja, was noch mehr,
     indeed, what's even more,
du öffnest auf ein Wort die blinden Augenlider.
you, with one word, open the eyelids of the blind.
Dies, dies sind Wunderwerke,
These, these are works of miracle,
und ihre Stärke
     and of their power
ist auch der Engel Chor nicht mächtig auszusprechen.
even choirs of angels have not
     the prowess to express.

4. ARIA ALTO
Gott hat alles wohlgemacht.
     God has made all well.
Seine Liebe, seine Treu
     His love, his devotion
wird uns alle Tage neu.
are renewed each day for us.
Wenn uns Angst und Kummer drücket,
When fear and distress pressed upon us
hat er reichen Trost geschicket,
     he sent abounding comfort
weil er täglich für uns wacht.
for he watches over us daily.
Gott hat alles wohlgemacht.
     God has made all well.

ZWEITER TEIL (Part 2)

5. SINFONIA

6. RECITATIVO ALTO
Ach, starker Gott, laß mich
doch dieses stets bedenken,
     Oh, mighty God, let me
     indeed continually ponder this,
so kann ich dich vergnügt
in meine Seele senken.
     so I can comfortably
     impress you in my soul.
Laß mir dein süßes Hephata
das ganz verstockte Herz erweichen;
     Let your sweet Hephata* melt
     my thoroughly stubborn heart;
Ach! lege nur den Gnadenfinger in die Ohren,
Oh! just place a merciful finger in my ears,
sonst bin ich gleich verloren.
otherwise I am the same as lost.
Rühr auch das Zungenband
Stir too the band of my tongue
mit deiner starken Hand,
     by your mighty hand,
damit ich diese Wunderzeichen
in heilger Andacht preise
that I might praise this sign of miracle
     in sacred devotion
und mich als Erb und Kind erweise.
and reveal me your inheritor and child.

7. ARIA ALTO
Ich wünsche nur bei Gott zu leben.
I wish simply to live with God.
Ach! wäre doch die Zeit schon da,
Oh! were that time but already here,
ein fröhliches Halleluja
mit allen Engeln anzuheben.
to lift up a gladsome hallelujah
     with all the angels.
Mein liebster Jesu, löse doch
     My dearest Jesus, do loosen
das jammerreiche Schmerzensjoch
     this misery-laden yoke of pain
und laß mich bald in deinen Händen
mein in martervolles Leben enden.
and let me soon, in your hands,
     end my torment-filled life.
