Text for Cantata 18
Gleichwie der Regen und Schnee vom Himmel fällt
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

1. SINFONIA

2. RECITATIVO BASSO
Gleichwie der Regen und Schnee
vom Himmel fällt
     Just as the rain and snow
     fall from the heavens
und nicht wieder dahin kommet,
     and do not again return there,
sondern feuchtet die Erde
     but rather water the earth
und macht sie fruchtbar und wachsend,
      and make it fruitful and furtile
daß sie gibt Samen zu säen
     that it bring forth seeds to sow
und Brot zu essen:
     and bread to eat:
also soll das Wort, so aus
meinem Munde gehet, auch sein;
     so shall the word that proceeds
     from my mouth also be;
es soll nicht wieder zu mir leer kommen,
     it should not come back to me empty
sondern tun, das mir gefället,
     but rather act to my pleasing
und soll ihm gelingen, dazu ich's sende.
     and help another succeed,
     which is why I send it.

3. RECITATIVO (E LITANEI) TENORE BASSO
Tenore

Mein Gott, hier wird mein Herze sein:
     My God, here will be my heart:
ich öffne dir's in meines Jesu Namen;
     I open it to you in my Jesus’ name;
so streue deinen Samen
     so I scatter your seeds
als in ein gutes Land hinein.
     as upon the fertile ground.

Mein Gott, hier wird mein Herze sein:
     My God, here will be my heart:
laß solches Frucht, und hundertfältig, bringen.
     let it bring forth such fruit, at a hundred-fold.
O Herr, Herr, hilf! o Herr, laß wohlgelingen!
     O Lord, Lord, help! O Lord, let it prosper!

Tutti
Du wollest deinen Geist und Kraft
zum Worte geben.
     You would impart the word
     with your Spirit and power.
Erhör uns, lieber Herre Gott!
     Hear us, dear Lord God!

Basso
Nur wehre, treuer Vater, wehre,
     But defend us, faithful Father, defend us,
daß mich und keinen Christen nicht
     that neither I nor any Christian
des Teufels Trug verkehre.
     be swayed by the Devil’s deception.
Sein Sinn ist ganz dahin gericht',
     His intent is thoroughly poised for this
uns deines Wortes zu berauben
     to deprive us of your word
mit aller Seligkeit.
     along with all its blessings.

Tutti
Den Satan unter unsre Füße treten.
     Trample Satan beneath our feet.
Erhör uns, lieber Herre Gott!
     Hear us, dear Lord God!

Tenore
Ach! viel verleugnen Wort und Glauben
     Alas! many deny the word and faith
und fallen ab wie faules Obst,
     and drop like rotting fruit
wenn sie Verfolgung sollen leiden.
     when they suffer persecution.
So stürzen sie in ewig Herzeleid,
     So they plummet into eternal heartache
da sie ein zeitlich Weh vermeiden.
     trying to evade this temporal woe.

Tutti
Und uns für unsrer Feind’s
     And from our foes’ *
grausamen Mord und Lästerungen,
     cruel murder and oppression,
Wüten und Toben väterlich behüten.
     ranting and raving, fatherly protect us.
Erhör uns, lieber Herre Gott!
     Hear us, dear Lord God!

Basso
Ein andrer sorgt nur für den Bauch;
     Some care only for the stomach;
inzwischen wird der Seele ganz vergessen;
     meanwhile the soul is completely forgotten;
Der Mammon auch hat vieler Herz besessen.
     Mammon too has obsessed many a heart.
So kann das Wort zu keiner Kraft gelangen.
     Thus the word can acheive no power.
Und wieviel Seelen hält die Wollust nicht gefangen?
     And how many souls has not lust held captive?
So sehr verführet sie die Welt,
     So much does it seduce the world,
die Welt, die ihnen muß anstatt des Himmels stehen,
     this world where they must remain rather than in Heaven,
darüber sie vom Himmel irregehen.
     which is how they lose their way to Heaven.

Tutti
Alle Irrige und Verführte wiederbringen.
     Bring back all the misguided and deluded.
Erhör uns, lieber Herre Gott!
     Hear us, dear Lord God!

4. ARIA SOPRANO
Mein Seelenschatz ist Gottes Wort;
     My soul’s treasure is the word of God;
außer dem sind alle Schätze solche Netze,
     other than this all treasures are just nets
welche Welt und Satan stricken,
     which the world and Satan have knit
Schnöde Seelen zu berücken.
     to ensnare distainful souls.
Fort mit allen, fort, nur fort!
     Away with them all, away, simply away!
Mein Seelenschatz ist Gottes Wort.
     My soul’s treasure is the word of God.

5. CORALE
Ich bitt, o Herr, aus Herzens Grund,
     I ask, O Lord, from my heart's core
du wollst nicht von mir nehmen
     that you not remove
dein heilges Wort aus meinem Mund;
     your holy word, from my mouth;
so wird mich nicht beschämen
     so will I not be shamed
mein Sünd und Schuld, denn in dein Huld
     by my sin and guilt, for in your grace
setz ich all mein Vertrauen:
     I place all my trust:
wer sich nur fest darauf verlässt,
     whoever simply surrenders firmly to this,
der wird den Tod nicht schauen.
     he will not view death.
