1. CORO
Wär Gott nicht mit uns diese Zeit,
     Were God not with us at this time,
so soll Israel sagen,
     so shall Israel say,
wär Gott nicht mit uns diese Zeit,
     were God not with us at this time,
wir hätten müssen verzagen,
     we would be in dismay,
die so ein armes Häuflein sind,
     we are such a meager band
veracht' von so viel Menschenkind,
     despised by so much of humankind,
die an uns setzen alle.
     they are all poised against us.
 
2. ARIA SOPRANO
Unsre Stärke heißt zu schwach,
     Our strength is notably too feeble
unserm Feind zu widerstehen.
     to withstand our foes.
Stünd uns nicht der Höchste bei,
     Were not the Most High
     standing beside us
würd uns ihre Tyrannei
bald bis an das Leben gehen.
     their tyranny would swiftly
     bring us to life’s end.
 
3. RECITATIVO TENORE
Ja, hätt es Gott nur zugegeben,
     Yes, had God merely given up
wir wären längst nicht mehr am Leben,
     our life would long be over,
sie rissen uns aus Rachgier hin,
     they would sweep us away in vindictiveness,
so zornig ist auf uns ihr Sinn.
     so wrathful is their intent against us.
Es hätt uns ihre Wut
     Their fury would have been upon us
wie eine wilde Flut
     like a raging torrent
und als beschäumte Wasser überschwemmet,
     and like frothing waters submerged us
und niemand hätte die Gewalt gehemmet.
     no one could have impeded its force.

4. ARIA BASSO
Gott, bei deinem starken Schützen
     God, by your mighty protection
sind wir vor den Feinden frei.
     we are free from our foes.
Wenn sie sich als wilde Wellen
uns aus Grimm entgegenstellen,
     When they fiercely confront us
     like raging waves,
stehn uns deine Hände bei.
     your hands steady us.
 
5. CORALE
Gott Lob und Dank, der nicht zugab,
     Praise and thanks to God,
     who did not give in,
daß ihr Schlund uns möcht fangen.
     for their throat wanted to entrap us.
Wie ein Vogel des Stricks kömmt ab,
     Like a bird released from a snare
ist unsre Seel entgangen:
     our soul escaped:
Strick ist entzwei, und wir sind frei;
     the snare is snapped in two,
     and we are free;
des Herren Name steht uns bei,
     the Lord's name stays by us,
des Gottes Himmels und Erden.
     the God of heaven and of earth.
