Erfreute Zeit im neuen Bunde,
Glad time in the new covenant,
da unser Glaube Jesum hält.
here our faith takes hold of Jesus.
Wie freudig wird zur letzten Stunde
How happy will be, in the final hour,
die Ruhestatt, das Grab, bestellt!
the place of rest, the grave, appointed!
2. ARIA E RECITATIVO BASSO
Herr, nun lässest du deinen Diener
Lord, now you let your servant
in Friede fahren, wie du gesaget hast.
depart in peace, as you have foretold.
Was uns als Menschen schrecklich scheint,
That which seems dreadful to us as humans
ist uns ein Eingang zu dem Leben.
is an entryway for us into [eternal] life.
Es ist der Tod ein Ende dieser Zeit und Not,
Death, it is an ending to this time and agony,
ein Pfand, das uns der Herr gegeben
a pledge which the Lord gave us
zum Zeichen, daß er's herzlich meint
as a sign that he sincerely means it,
und uns will nach vollbrachtem Ringen
zum Frieden bringen.
and that he, after full-fledged wrestling
will bring us into peace.
Und weil der Heiland nun
And, as the Savior is now
der Augen Trost, des Herzens Labsal ist,
a comfort to the eye and refreshment for the heart ,
was Wunder, daß ein Herz des Todes Furcht vergißt!
what wonder, that a heart forgets the fear of death!
Es kann den erfreuten Ausspruch tun:
So can the glad statement be made:
Denn meine Augen haben deinen Heiland gesehen,
For my eyes have beheld your Savior,
welchen du bereitet hast vor allen Völkern.
which you have prepared before all peoples.
3. ARIA TENORE
Eile, Herz, voll Freudigkeit
Hasten, heart, full of joyousness
vor den Gnadenstuhl zu treten.
to tread before the throne of grace.
Du sollst deinen Trost empfangen
You shall receive your consolation
und Barmherzigkeit erlangen,
and acquire mercifulness,
ja, bei kummervoller Zeit,
yea, in grief-stricken times
stark am Geiste, kräftig beten.
strong of spirit, pray boldly.
4. RECITATIVO ALTO
Ja, merkt dein Glaube noch viel Finsternis,
Yea, though your faith notes great darkness still,
dein Heiland kann der Zweifel Schatten trennen;
your Savior can sever the shadow of doubt;
ja, wenn des Grabes Nacht
yea, when the night of the grave
die letzte Stunde schrecklich macht,
makes the final hour dreadful,
so wirst du doch gewiß
so you will certainly indeed
sein helles Licht im Tode selbst erkennen.
perceive his bright light in death itself.
5. CORALE
Er ist das Heil und selig Licht
He is the salvation and blessed light
für die Heiden,
for the gentiles,
zu erleuchten, die dich kennen nicht,
to enlighten them who know you not,
und zu weiden.
and to shepherd them.
Er ist deins Volks Israel
He is of your people, Israel,
der Preis, Ehr, Freud und Wonne.
the praise, glory, joy and bliss.
