ERSTER TEIL (Part I)
1. CORO
Wachet! betet! betet! wachet!
Watch! Pray! Pray! Watch!
Seid bereit allezeit,
Be prepared at all times
bis der Herr der Herrlichkeit
until the Lord of glory
dieser Welt ein Ende machet.

2. RECITATIVO BASSO
Erschrecket, ihr verstockten Sünder!
Be frightened, you unrepentant sinners!
Ein Tag bricht an,
A day is dawning
vor dem sich niemand bergen kann:
from which no one can hide:
er eilt mit dir zum strengen Rechte,
it hastens you to the severe justice,
O! sündliches Geschlechte,
O sinful generation,
zum ew’gen Herzeleide.
unto eternal heartache.
Doch euch, erwählte Gotteskinder,
Yet to you, chosen children of God,
ist er ein Anfang wahrer Freude.
it is the beginning of true joy.
Der Heiland holet euch,
The Savior gathers you,
wenn alles fällt und bricht,
as all else falls apart,
vor sein erhöhtes Angesicht;
before his exalted countenance;

Wenn kömmt der Tag,
When would that day come,
an dem wir ziehen
when we depart
aus dem Ägypten dieser Welt?
from the Egypt of this world?
Ach! laßt uns bald aus Sodom fliehen,
Ah! let us quickly flee from Sodom,
eh uns das Feuer überfällt!
before the fire consumes us!
Wacht, Seelen, auf von Sicherheit
Wake up, souls, from your certainty
und glaubt, es ist die letzte Zeit!
and believe, it is the final hour!
4. RECITATIVO TENORE
Auch bei dem himmlischen Verlangen
Even while longing for heaven
hält unser Leib den Geist gefangen;
our body holds the spirit captive;
Es legt die Welt durch ihre Tücke
By its treachery the world lays
den Frommen Netz und Stricke.
nets and snares for the devout.
Der Geist ist willig,
The spirit is willing,
doch das Fleisch ist schwach;
but the flesh is weak;
dies preßt uns aus ein jammervolles Ach!
this wrenches from us a lamenting “Alas”!
5. ARIA SOPRANO
Laßt der Spötter Zungen schmähen,
Let the scoffers’ tongues revile,
es wird doch und muß geschehen,
it simply will be and must occur,
daß wir Jesum werden sehen
that we will behold Jesus
auf den Wolken, in den Höhen.
upon the clouds, in the heights.
Welt und Himmel mag vergehen,
Earth and heaven may pass away,
Christi Wort muß fest bestehen.
Christ's Word must stand fast.

Jedoch bei dem unartigen Geschlechte
Evenso, amidst this ill-bred generation
denkt Gott an seine Knechte,
God thinks on his servants,
daß diese böse Art
that this evil breed
sie ferner nicht verletzet,
harms them no further,
indem er sie in seiner Hand bewahrt
because he guards them in his hand
und in ein himmlisch Eden setzet.
and sets them in a heavenly Eden.

Freu dich sehr, o meine Seele,
Rejoice greatly, O my soul,
und vergiß all Not und Qual,
and forget all misery and torment
weil dich nun Christus, dein Herre,
for now Christ your Lord
ruft aus diesem Jammertal!
beckons you from this vale of tears!
Seine Freud und Herrlichkeit
His joy and glory
sollt du sehn in Ewigkeit,
you shall behold in eternity,
mit den Engeln jubilieren,
jubilating with the angels,
in Ewigkeit triumphieren.

8. ARIA TENORE
Hebt euer Haupt empor
Raise your heads aloft
und seid getrost, ihr Frommen,
and be comforted, you devout ones,
zu eurer Seelen Flor!
that your souls might bloom!
Ihr sollt in Eden grünen,
You shall green in Eden
Gott ewiglich zu dienen.
to serve God eternally.
9. RECITATIVO BASSO
Ach, soll nicht dieser große Tag,
Oh, shall not this giant day,
der Welt Verfall und der Posaunen Schall,
the downfall of the world and the sound of trumpets,
der unerhörte letzte Schlag,
the tremendous final blow,
des Richters ausgesprochne Worte,
the judge’s pronounced words,
des Höllenrachens offne Pforte
the open portals of hell's wrath,
in meinem Sinn viel Zweifel, Furcht
und Schrecken,
arouse in my mind much doubt,
fear and terror,
der ich ein Kind der Sünden bin, erwecken?
as I am a child of sin?
Jedoch, es gehet meiner Seelen
Evenso, upon my soul there comes
Ein Freudenschein, ein Licht des Trostes auf.
a glimmer of joy, a light of comfort.
Der Heiland kann sein Herze nicht verhehlen,
The Savior cannot conceal his heart,
so vor Erbarmen bricht,
so bursting with mercy,
sein Gnadenarm verläßt mich nicht.
his gracious arm does not forsake me.
Wohlan, so ende ich mit Freuden meinen Lauf.
So then, thus I finish my journey in joy.
10. ARIA BASSO
Seligster Erquickungstag,
Blessed day of revival,
führe mich zu deinen Zimmern!
lead me to your chambers.
Schalle, knalle, letzter Schlag,
Resound, peal, final stroke,
Welt und Himmel, geht zu Trümmern!
earth and heaven, scattered to ruin!
Jesus führet mich zur Stille,
Jesus leads me unto stillness,
an den Ort, da Lust die Fülle.
to that place where desire is fulfilled.
11. CORALE
Nicht nach Welt, nach Himmel nicht
Neither for the world, nor for heaven
Meine Seele wünscht und sehnet,
does my soul wish or yearn,
Jesum wünsch ich und sein Licht,
I wish for Jesus and his light,
der mich hat mit Gott versöhnet,
who has reconciled me unto God
der mich freiet vom Gericht,
who frees me from judgement
meinen Jesum laß ich nicht.
my Jesus I will not leave.
