Jesu, meine Freude,
Jesus, my joy,
meines Herzens Weide,
pasture of my heart,
Jesu, meine Zier,
Jesus, my adornment,
ach wie lang, ach lange
ah, how long, so long,
ist dem Herzen bange
my heart has been anxious
und verlangt nach dir!
pining for you!
Gottes Lamm, mein Bräutigam,
Lamb of God, my bridegroom,
außer dir soll mir auf Erden nichts sonst Liebers werden.

2. Es ist nun nichts Verdammliches an denen,
There is now no condemnation of them
die in Christo Jesu sind,
who are in Christ Jesus,
die nicht nach dem Fleische wandeln,
who walk not according to the flesh,
sondern nach dem Geist.

Unter deinem Schirmen
Under your umbrella
bin ich vor den Stürmen aller Feinde frei.
am I free from tempest and all foes.
Laß den Satan wittern,
Let Satan storm
laß den Feind erbittern,
let the foe embitter,
mir steht Jesus bei.
Jesus stands by me.
Ob es itzt gleich kracht und blitzt,
Though all at once there is thunder and lightning,
ob gleich Sünd und Hölle schrecken:
though at once sin and Hell shriek:
Jesus will mich dekken.
Jesus will cover me.
4. Denn das Gesetz des Geistes, der da lebendig machet in Christo Jesu,
For the law of the Spirit, who makes life in Christ Jesus,
hat mich frei gemacht von dem Gesetz der Sünde und des Todes.
has set me free from the law of sin and death.
5. Trotz dem alten Drachen,
Defy the ancient dragon,
trotz des Todes Rachen,
defy death’s vengeance,
trotz der Furcht darzu,
defy the fear of these.
Tobe, Welt, und springe
Rage, O world, and spring
ich steh hier und singe,
I stand here and sing,
in gar sicher Ruh.
in complete, sure peace.
Gottes Macht hält mich in acht;
God's might keeps me under guard;
Erd und Abgrund muß verstummen,
earth and abyss must stay silent,
ob sie noch so brummen.
even though they would still growl.
6. Ihr aber seid nicht fleischlich, sondern geistlich,
You, however, are not of the flesh, but of the Spirit,
so anders Gottes Geist in euch wohnet.
as God's Spirit otherwise dwells in you.
Wer aber Christi Geist nicht hat,
But whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ
der ist nicht sein.
is not his.

Weg mit allen Schätzen,
Away with all treasures,
du bist mein Ergötzen, Jesu, meine Lust!
you are my delight, Jesus my desire!
Weg, ihr eiten Ehren,
Away, you idle glories,
ich mag euch nicht hören,
I do not want to hear you,
bleibt mir unbewußt!
remain unbeknown to me!
Elend, Not, Kreuz, Schmach und Tod,
Misery, distress, cross, shame and death,
soll mich, ob ich viel muß leiden,
shall not, even if I must greatly suffer,
nicht von Jesu scheiden.
separate me from Jesus.
8. So aber Christus in euch ist,
So, however, as Christ is in you,
so ist der Leib zwar tot,
though the body admittedly is dead
um der Sünde willen;
by the will of sin;
der Geist aber ist das Leben
the Spirit is however life
um der Gerechtigkeit willen.
by the will of righteousness.
9. Gute Nacht, o Wesen,
Good Night, O being,
das die Welt erlesen,
which the world has chosen,
mir gefällst du nicht.
you please me not.
Gute Nacht, ihr Sünden,
Good Night, you sins,
bleibet weit dahinten,
remain far behind me,
kommt nicht mehr ans Licht!
come no more into the light!
Gute Nacht, du Stolz und Pracht!
Good Night, you pride and pomp!
Dir sei ganz, du Lasterleben, Gute Nacht gegeben.
To you wholly, dissolute life, be bid Good Night.
10. So nun der Geist des, der Jesum von den Toten auferwekket hat,
If now that Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead
in euch wohnet, so wird auch derselbige,
dwells in you, so will also that very one
der Christum von den Toten auferwekket hat,
who raised Christ from the dead,
eure sterblichen Leiber lebendig machen
make your mortal bodies alive
um des willen, daß sein Geist in euch wohnet.
by the will of his Spirit dwelling in you.

Weicht, ihr Trauergeister,
Yield, you mournful spirits,
denn mein Freudenmeister,
for my master of joy,
Jesus, tritt herein.
Jesus, is entering.
Denen, die Gott lieben,
Of them, whom God loves,
muß auch ihr Betrüben
their grief must also
lauter Zucker sein.
become great sweetness.
Duld ich schon hier Spott und Hohn,
Though here I’ve already endured scorn and spite,
dennoch bleibst du auch im Leide,
nevertheless you remain, even in my suffering,
Jesu, meine Freude.
Jesus, my joy.
