Wo Gott der Herr nicht bei uns hält,
Were God the Lord not beside us,
wenn unsre Feinde toben,
whenever our enemies were raging,
und er unser Sach nicht zufällt
and if he did not attend to
our concerns
im Himmel hoch dort oben,
there high above in heaven,
wo er Israel Schutz nicht ist
were his protection for Israel
not present
und selber bricht der Feinde List,
and were he himself not to shatter
the foes‘ guile
so ist's mit uns verloren.
so would we be lost.

Was Menschenkraft und -witz anfäht,
Whatever human-might
and wit provoke
soll uns billig nicht schrecken;
simply shall not frighten us;
denn Gott der Höchste steht uns bei

in their cleverness
auf Schlangenlist
und falsche Ränke sinnen,
with serpentine guile
and false intrigues,
der Bosheit Endzweck zu gewinnen;
that they might obtain their
wicked ultimate goal;
so geht doch Gott ein ander Bahn:
then God takes still another path:
er führt die Seinigen mit starker Hand,
he leads his own with a mighty hand,
durchs Kreuzesmeer,
in das gelobte Land,
across the sea of the cross,
into the promised land,
da wird er alles Unglück wenden.
where he will alter all misfortunes.
Es steht in seinen Händen.
It lies in his hands.

Gleichwie die wilden Meereswellen
Just as the savage waves of the sea
mit Ungestüm ein Schiff zerschellen,
smash with vehemence
against a ship,
so raset auch der Feinde Wut
so too raves the foes‘ wrath
und raubt das beste Seelengut.

of its greatest good.
Sie wollen Satans Reich erweitern,
They want to expand Satan’s realm,
und Christi Schifflein soll zerscheitern.
and cause Christ’s tiny ship
to flounder.

Sie stellen uns wie Ketzern nach,
They stalk us like heretics,
nach unserm Blut sie trachten;
they thirst for our blood;
noch rühmen sie sich Christen auch,
they even claim to be Christians as well,
die Gott allein groß achten.

their villainy,

and depose their false teachings.
B: Gott wird die törichten Propheten
mit Feuer seines Zornes töten
God will slay the false prophets
by the fire of his wrath
und ihre Ketzerei verstören.
and disrupt their heresy.
Sie werden's Gott nicht wehren.
They will not withstand God.

Schweig, schweig nur,
taumelnde Vernunft!
Hush, hush, faltering reason!
Sprich nicht: Die Frommen sind verlorn,
Do not say,
“The pious are forsaken”
das Kreuz hat sie nur neu geborn.

Denn denen, die auf Jesum hoffen,
For unto them, who hope in Jesus
steht stets die Tür der Gnaden offen;
the door of grace stands ever open;
und wenn sie Kreuz und Trübsal drückt,
and when cross and tribulation oppress them,
so werden sie mit Trost erquickt.
so will they be rejuvenated
in comfort.

Die Feind sind all in deiner Hand,
The foes are all within your hand,
darzu all ihr Gedanken;
and with them all their notions;
ihr Anschläg sind dir, Herr, bekannt,
their assaults are known
to you, Lord,
hilf nur, daß wir nicht wanken.
just help us not to waver.
Vernunft wider den Glauben ficht,
Should reason contend with faith
aufs Künftge will sie trauen nicht,
eventually it will lose the trust,
da du wirst selber trösten.
for you yourself will bring comfort.
Den Himmel und auch die Erden
hast du, Herr Gott, gegründet;
You Lord have established
both heaven and earth;
dein Licht lass uns helle werden,
your light brightens us,
das Herz uns werd entzündet
our hearts become ignited
in rechter Lieb des Glaubens dein,
in true love of faith in you,
bis an das End beständig sein.
steadfast unto the end.
Die Welt lass immer murren.
Let the world ever grumble.
