Weinen, Klagen,
Weeping, lamentation,
Sorgen, Zagen,
worries, apprehension,
Angst und Not
fear and distress
sind der Christen Tränenbrot,
die das Zeichen Jesu tragen.

for Christians who carry the emblem of Jesus.

Wir müssen durch viel Trübsal
We must traverse great tribulation
in das Reich Gottes eingehen.

Kreuz und Krone sind verbunden,
Cross and crown are bound together,
Kampf und Kleinod sind vereint.
battle and treasure are united.
Christen haben alle Stunden
Christians have at every hour
ihre Qual und ihren Feind,
their torments and their foes,
doch ihr Trost sind Christi Wunden.
yet their comfort is the wounds of Christ.

Ich folge Christo nach,
I follow after Christ,
von ihm will ich nicht lassen

ich will sein Kreuz umfassen.

Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan

driven by despair, death and misery
so wird Gott mich
ganz väterlich
yet in complete fatherliness
